Overview

A storefront for artisans, run by artisans

Himal Handicrafts is a small cooperative in Bhaktapur selling handwoven textiles made by local weavers. Before this project, they sold entirely through Instagram DMs and word of mouth — no catalog, no checkout, no way to track what was actually in stock.

That constraint shaped almost every decision that followed, from how products get added to how stock is tracked to how the checkout itself was built.

Industry

The Challenge

Before launch, growth had a ceiling built into the workflow itself.

The cooperative was selling real, well-made products — the problem was never demand. It was that every part of the buying process still ran through a phone, by hand.

04

Unresolved Problems

01

No Online Catalog

Products were only shown through scattered Instagram posts.

02

Manual Order Handling

Every order and payment was tracked by hand over direct messages.

03

No Stock Visibility

Nobody had a real-time view of what was actually left to sell.

04

No Mobile Friendly

Most customers browsed on their phones — the site wasn't built for that.

The Solution

A system built to answer each one

Same four numbers as the challenge above — this is what replaced each problem.

01

Full Product Catalog

Browsable categories, search, and filtering — always current.

02

Self Serve Checkout

WooCommerce checkout with saved order history.

03

Real Time Inventory Sync

Stock syncs automatically, both online and on the shelf.

04

Mobile First Experience

Designed and tested on real phones, not resized after the fact.

Problems Solved

The Approach

Three decisions that shaped the build

Every project has a handful of calls that end up mattering more than the rest. These were the ones here.

/01

Inventory Tied to Reality

WooCommerce stock counts sync directly with what's physically on the shelf, so the site never sells something that isn't there.

/02

A Checkout Non-Designers Can Edit

Product pages and the checkout flow were built with Elementor and ACF, so the team can add new pieces themselves without touching code.

/03

Mobile First, Genuinely

Most customers browse on phones over patchy connections, so the entire build was designed mobile-first and tested on real 3G speeds, not just resized in a browser.
